Types of child protection software for schools

"Child protection software" covers four different kinds of tools. Internet filtering and device monitoring control what students can do on school devices; safeguarding case management records and manages the concerns that staff and students raise; training teaches students, parents and staff to recognise and report harm. Child Protect is safeguarding case management and training, not an internet filter.

Quick answer

What is the difference between safeguarding software and internet filtering?

Internet filtering and device monitoring are IT controls: they block websites, watch screens and flag searches on school-managed devices. Safeguarding case management is a workflow for people: a concern is reported (often anonymously), triaged, recorded as a case with evidence and a chronology, escalated or referred to the right agency, and audited. Most schools need both, from different vendors. Child Protect Platform is the case-management part, with the Child Protect Academy providing the training part.

The four categories, and who buys each one

Each category solves a different problem and is usually owned by a different person in the school.

CategoryWhat it doesTypical ownerExamples of the category
Web filteringBlocks or allows websites and apps on school networks and managed devices; logs attempts to reach blocked content.IT managerContent filters built into firewalls, DNS filters, classroom filtering suites.
Device and classroom monitoringWatches student screens, searches and messages on managed devices; raises alerts for self-harm, bullying or grooming keywords; lets teachers control screens in class.IT manager, with the safeguarding lead receiving alertsClassroom management and student-safety monitoring suites.
Safeguarding case managementReceives concerns from staff, students and parents (including anonymously); creates a case; preserves evidence; keeps a chronology and audit trail; escalates urgent cases; prepares referrals to external agencies; reports to leaders.Designated safeguarding lead and school leadershipChild Protect Platform; government systems such as CPIS for social workers.
Child-safety trainingTeaches students, parents, caregivers and staff to recognise unsafe situations, protect privacy and ask for help; records completion and issues certificates.Safeguarding lead, head of pastoral care, HRChild Protect Academy; NGO and government e-learning programmes.

Categories are described from vendors' own published descriptions. A monitoring alert still needs a case-management record to become an accountable response.

Why a filter does not replace case management

🧭

Different starting point

A filter sees network traffic. A concern about a child usually starts with a person: a student who tells a teacher, a parent email, an anonymous report, a bruise noticed at school.

🗂️

Different record

A filter log shows that a site was blocked. A case file shows who reported what, when, what was decided, what evidence exists and which agency was contacted.

⚖️

Different accountability

Schools are asked by inspectors, parents and courts what they did after a concern was raised. That question is answered from the case record, not from the firewall.

🔁

They work together

A monitoring alert can be logged as a concern in Child Protect and handled as a case. The filter stays the IT team's tool; the case belongs to the safeguarding lead.

What safeguarding case management must include

1
A way to report that students will actually use

Anonymous reporting by QR code or link, in Thai and English, with no account needed and a way for the school to reply.

2
Triage and an urgent path

Severity rules that escalate critical reports automatically and start a response clock.

3
A case record with evidence and chronology

Notes, files, photos and messages stored with integrity checks; a timeline that cannot be quietly rewritten.

4
Referral support

A prepared pack for police, the 1300 social-assistance line, provincial social services or the Ministry of Education, with a permanent record of what was sent.

5
Access control and audit

Role-based access, two-factor authentication and a full audit trail of who viewed and changed each case.

6
Oversight

Group-level views for school groups and reports for leaders and boards.

Where Child Protect fits

Child Protect is two connected parts, both built in Thailand for Thai and international schools.

🛡️

Child Protect Platform

Safeguarding case management: anonymous reporting, automatic escalation, case files, evidence preservation, referral packs, audit trail, Thai and English interface, PDPA-aware data handling.

🎓

Child Protect Academy

Child-safety training: ten student courses in three age tracks, parent and caregiver courses, school staff training, with video lessons, quizzes and digital certificates.

🚫

Not an internet filter

Child Protect does not block websites, monitor devices or read student messages. Schools keep their existing filtering and monitoring tools and record the concerns those tools surface in Child Protect.

Common questions

Is Child Protect an internet filter or monitoring tool?

No. Child Protect Platform is safeguarding case management software and the Child Protect Academy is child-safety training. Neither blocks websites, monitors devices or reads student messages.

Do we still need a web filter if we use Child Protect?

Yes. Filtering and monitoring are IT controls on devices and networks. Child Protect manages the concerns people raise and the cases that follow, including concerns that a filter or monitoring alert surfaces.

Can monitoring alerts be recorded in Child Protect?

Yes. Any alert can be logged as a concern, triaged and handled as a case with evidence, chronology, escalation and referral. The platform also provides an API for external platform integration.

What does "safeguarding case management software" mean?

Software that takes a child-protection concern inside a school from the first report to a documented, accountable response: reporting, triage, case file, evidence, referral and audit.

Which category does CPIS belong to?

CPIS is the Thai government Child Protection Information System used by social workers under the Department of Children and Youth. It is case management for government services, not for schools. Child Protect is a school-operated system; schools still refer cases to agencies in the usual way.
