A child told us about abuse. What should the school do?
A practical checklist for teachers and safeguarding leads in Thailand: who to call, what to write down, and what not to do.
Quick answer
Who do you call to report child abuse in Thailand?
If a child is in immediate danger, call the police on 191. For a medical emergency, call 1669. To report child abuse, neglect or exploitation, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) Social Assistance Centre helpline is 1300, available 24 hours. Inside a school, tell the designated safeguarding lead straight away and follow your school’s child protection policy.
What to do, step by step
If the child or anyone is in danger now, call 191. If someone needs medical help, call 1669. Do not wait for a form.
Let the child speak in their own words. Stay calm, do not ask leading questions and do not promise to keep it secret.
Record what was said, in the child’s words, with the date, time and who was present. Stick to facts, not opinions.
Pass the concern to your designated safeguarding lead without delay and follow your school’s policy.
Keep messages, images and files as they are. Do not edit, forward widely or delete.
The safeguarding lead decides whether to contact the police, MSDHS 1300, social services or the Ministry of Education, and records what was shared and when.
Keep the child safe at school, limit who knows, and review what happened.
What not to do
Do not investigate alone
Questioning the child or the person involved can harm the child and the case.
Do not promise secrecy
Tell the child you will share it only with people who need to know to keep them safe.
Do not delete or alter evidence
Preserve it exactly as it is.
Where Child Protect helps
Child Protect gives staff a structured report, lets students and staff report anonymously by QR code, flags urgent and critical concerns, stores evidence securely and prepares a referral pack and referral log. It does not replace emergency services, and it does not send reports to agencies for you. See the features page for details.
Official sources
Numbers and procedures can change. Check official sources for current numbers: Thai government guide to important phone numbers and UNICEF Thailand on the 1300 helpline. The school’s legal duties depend on Thai law and your own policy, so take advice where you are unsure.
